Sepulchorporeal / Amore

by Abyssal / Ellorsith

Dave Aftandilian
Dave Aftandilian thumbnail
Dave Aftandilian Punishing, avant-garde, historically inspired death metal split by two modern masters. Say you sleep in the house where a noble family was murdered—would they visit you in your nightmares? Would you wake up? Or what if you became so obsessed with someone that you brought their body into your bed after death, the delicate scent of rot flaring your nostrils and engorging your emotions? Is that true love, or all sanity lost?
Camelus Dromedarius

Camelus Dromedarius Abyssal's newest split is their most progressive piece of music yet. The production and composition are reminiscent of their second LP, their split Apanthropinization, and Antikatastaseis, but more evolved, with more of the aforementioned progressive elements as well as a bit more lead presence. Always wonderful to have more Abyssal. Favorite track: Abyssal - Sepulchorporeal (Ipatiev I).

David Fischer There is barely an artist as skilled in harnessing the darkness as Abyssal's G.D.C., yet I have to admit that Ellorsith's contribution to this split (despite being different in style and execution) also very much succeeds at doing that. Moreover, the story of Carl von Cosel and his... bride... is one of the most disturbing I have heard in a long one. While I still prefer the cacophonous, chaos- and voidstricken terrors of Abyssal, I will definitely keep an eye on the Canadians. Great split. Favorite track: Abyssal - Sepulchorporeal (Ipatiev I).
Matten

Matten Abyssal seamlessly ties together unique musical ideas into a cohesive whole. Distinct and non-formulaic, yet still unquestionably Abyssal, G.D.C. clearly has a grasp on what the band's true essence is (which I don't). Somehow the unassuming lyrical theme is made to fit the music as well.
Ellorsith pairs very nicely with Abyssal both in sound and the dark emotions in musical form, with a fittingly twisted theme. A very focused split, no boring parts on either band's side. Favorite track: Abyssal - Sepulchorporeal (Ipatiev I).
Ippocalyptica
Ippocalyptica thumbnail
Ippocalyptica Truly, this is thus far some of Abyssal's best work to date, though I will wait until 5 May to provide specific impressions. As for Ellorsith, I love their Triumphant Nothingness compilation but that could not prepare me for what they are showing so far on this split. Most extreme metal bands were merely adopted by the darkness, but Abyssal and Ellorsith were evidently born in it.

Dark Descent Records unveils an ungodly pact between two exceptional merchants of death: U.K.’s and the enigmatic Ellorsith.

The split release showcases mastery in mind-warping death/black metal from two unique angles. Abyssal’s reverb-laden and dissonant cascades of notes exist in seamless synergy with the twisted and doom-ed barrage of Ellorsith.

“Abyssal has been a part of our musical journey throughout the years,“ speaks Ellorsith. “There is a certain inscrutability and elemental force that can be found in both acts, as well as a similar approach to just letting the art speak for itself. Moreover, I think we share or cherish the importance of the concepts and lyrics as a major foundation of each release.”

It is the aforementioned foundation on thematic concepts that makes the bands such an impeccable match. “We wanted to explore the sepia stained recesses of the early twentieth century – a time that existed on the brink of photography, and left naught but a faint imprint of ghostly images – glimpses into the past through crude analogue machinery,” reflects G.D.C., the entity behind Abyssal’s hellish creations.

“Ellorsith’s side 'Amore' focuses on the tale of Carl Tänzler (aka Carl von Cosel) whose love for his tuberculosis patient Elena Milagro de Hoyos turned into a ghoulish obsession beyond her demise."
