I generally hate doom metal, finding most of it painfully dull and simply too slow to maintain my interest. There are exceptions, of course, such as Messa, Hamferd, and a few others, but I mostly stay away. I open this way in order to proclaim that I love Out of the Garden, and to say that Crypt Sermon totally fucking knocks it out of the park here. The “traditional” vocals, the constantly-varied and powerful guitar melodies and riffs, the thunderous drums, the “epic” and sometimes haunting atmosphere, and the fact that this is slightly slower than mid-paced (as opposed to glacial) makes for an incredibly compelling package. Also, this reminds of Rainbow at its peak, which is good. These Philadelphia masters deserve more recognition, and they will get it.
Favorite track: Temple Doors.
